ObsVentes - Sampling of professional fisheries landings

The observation of sales consists of periodically measuring the size of individuals of the main species at auctions and landing points, taking into account the commercial names used at the point of sale. This system, called ObsVentes, is applied in metropolitan France and in the French overseas territories : Guyane, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Réunion and Mayotte.

Statement

Observation data from auctions or landing points, collected via the ObsVentes system, contain: the fishing area(s), the composition of part of the marketed catches: for each species sold, part of each commercial category landed is taken, which constitutes the sample. Each sample is weighed and all individuals in the sample are measured and sexed according to species.

The observers collect these data according to a rigorous scientific protocol of IFREMER.

- Sampling plan(s) :

In mainland France, observations are made on the basis of a sampling plan that randomly determines the list of species to be observed for each auction or landing point.

This plan is stratified geographically (by auction or landing point) and temporally (by quarter).

In the overseas regions, the observations are also carried out on the basis of a sampling plan stratified geographically (in observation units) and temporally (by quarter) and a list of species to be measured is provided to each region.

- Specification of the type of data :

Data to produce size structures of landings of the main commercial species.

- Parameter(s) observed or measured :

- Observation data: trade name of the species observed, scientific name of the species observed, trade category, species presentation, size.

- Measurements of individuals by species are made according to international standards.

- For some species the sex may also be collected.

• Resolution of the parameter(s) :

Data are banked by sale (vessel-date pair).

• Format(s):

Within the ObsVentes data, there are two types of data, with the same format:

- from 12/01/1982 to 05/11/2012: historical data entered in the Arpège software

- since 06/11/2012: data entered on a software synchronised with the Harmonie database: Allegro.
